Post 6

The final blog post! Yeah I know I was super late……because I have some family affairs that quite affects me……Anyway, for this blog post I’m going to share the parody that my group made, well although it’s the first time I do such things but I really enjoy doing it.

Ok sharing time, as this is the last blog post for the first semester, I guess I will share some of my experience in uni. Getting lecture’s PDF, taking attendance, handing assignments, and so on, all are connected with technology, which really gives me a big headache…… Well I guess the past life of me is probably a monkey living in deep forest haha. Also I didn’t do well in many aspects, at least they didn’t hit my expectations most of the time, guess I have to be put more effort in the coming days~

Well I’m no difference with the ancient ones

First, the group video. The parody video that we make is Selena Gomez’s song ‘Hands to Yourself’. The concept of our video is about ideology of the society regards of girls should be slim, makeup are for girls only, and discrimination on prostitute. Most of us are affected by the ideology of the society, it limits us on what we should and should not do from what we really want to do, and somehow limits our imagination and creation.  For example, you want to become an artist, but most of the society thinks that artist will starve to death, are you going listen to them, or continue to pursue your dream? Sometimes what you want to do is more important that what you should do.

Lets enjoy the video of our group~

Like and Comment!

Next for the user-generated content (UGC). UGC is the content that are published or posted on the internet where others can have access to. For simple examples, the photos and stories on Instagram, the post published or shared by your friends on Facebook, the blog post that we write and post on internet, and so on. UGC is everywhere around us, even if you live in a cave you may even have the chance to see the UGC of the ancient unevolved people. (Ok just kidding)

When I was young, my biggest entertainment was to able to watch TV shows all day long. Not only entertainment, but also knowledge and news can be obtained through TV. As the technology moves on, TV is not the main source of these things anymore In current century, we can easily get access to all of them from the internet or other social platform. The present of UGC nowadays had covered almost all of our needs and its even easier than TV, we can get what we want from the internet at any time, any where as long as we have our device on hand, and this slowly eliminates TV as we cannot carry TV wherever we go, and we cannot control the content that the TV showed. For an example, although we now cannot access to Singapore’s TV channel in Malaysia if we do not have the digital receptor, I did not see any major impacts that are brought to us as most of us already replace TV with their devices. Not joking but TV channel may be eliminated In the future if this trend continues, but still maybe TV is useful in several aspects which I did not observe.

That’s all for my blog post today. As it is the last blog post of this semester, I will put a photo of fried chicken because I like it very much. Do drop I like if you like my post or the video of our group, and feel free to give comments below for our video. Lastly, goodbye to mind-blowing blog post and see you in next semester~

I’ll give 10000 out of 100 for this kind of heaven food
Beat Me? NO CHANCE AT ALL!

Post 5

Hello fellas! First of all, sorry because I was so busy until I forgot to do the blog post…… Anyway by the time you see it it was done so don’t care too much about such small things okay~

So much work to do……

Again it is sharing time, so that the blog post is more interesting, and to prevent me from sleeping because of boredom. There is a question that I have been thinking for a long time, is laziness really that bad? Yeah we get lazy most of the time, at least I was like that, but laziness don’t make me to avoid my work most of the time, instead it helps me to find the easiest way to do the work. It makes sense right as people are actually motivated by laziness to become more creative and innovative sometimes. Jack Ma said before that he always get lazy workers to do the complicated works because they are the ones who find the simplest way to solve it. All roads lead to Rome, although we are lazy, it doesn’t mean that we can’t get our jobs done in a perfect way. I’m not promoting negative laziness that ignores every work, but positive laziness makes us better sometimes~ So, be a lazy person starting from today.

So tired…… So lazy…..

Okay back to the blog post. Today this blog post will discuss about the mediated public sphere and the subvertisement my group did last week. Public sphere is a concept developed by Jurgen Habermas in the 18th century, where individuals have the chance to talk and give opinions on societal issues without being controlled by the government. As for the mediated public sphere, it shares the similar concept with public sphere, but the debate and discussion are done on media platform. It was once a hilarious concept in the past due to many factors such as insufficient of money and place for the discussion, but it is already a common phenomena nowadays because of the advance of technology and information sharing system.

There are indeed some interesting topics discussed on those platforms. I give an example from Malaysia, the ‘Seni Khat’ issue, which is also known as the Jawi issue in here. The Ministry of Education Malaysia claims that the Seni Khat, which is the Jawi calligraphy, should be included in Malay textbook starting from primary four. The reason given by them is that the mother language of Malaysia, Malay, use the Jawi type of writing in the past instead of the Rumi type that we used today, so learning Jawi is necessary in order to increase the interest when learning Malay. This caused a big rebound from the society as they think it is unnecessary and useless to their children’s education and could be another burden for them. A lot of debate were raised due to this issue and people even start losing confidence to the government that they choose. The education system in Malaysia is always being questioned and criticised by the society, and this issue enhance this phenomena. It is a quite sensitive issue so I’ll end it here.

probably confused whether is writing or scribbling

For the subvertisement last week, the topic is what is our interpretation of the word feminism. For my team, we all agree with that feminism is about gender equality. Most of people will think that men is ok with the body hair, but women with body hair will be considered as disgusting. With this concept, we chose dDove as the brand that we subvertised. Dove, in many ways that we actually did not realised, promotes that females should be clean and hairless in order to be beautiful. Many advertisement and shaving products were came out from the company, emphasising this unfair concept. When men can feel free to show their body hair without being judged, why women with body hair has to be classified as disgusting and unpleasant? Beauty is more to what you are in the inside that what you look from the outside, so we decide to make a poster related to this.

Hairy poster indeed

In our poster, we wanted to let the society knows that you can be beautiful without changing yourself to fit in the society. Beauty is not about how you meet the other’s definition of beauty, it is about how you live your live without being changed by the others perspective.

1 hour group work, good job guys~

So that’s all for my blog post today, thank you for your reading and do drop a like down below if you like my post~

Post 4

Yeah we’re back to the blog post again and this time we’re going to talk about the issue, does it matter who owns the media, government or private company.

My brain cells every time a blog post assignment comes

every time I try spicy things

A sharing in every post so that this won’t be so boring. Recently in Malaysia, the triple spicy Mc Chicken is smokin’ hot. If you guys haven’t even try the original Mc Chicken, I strongly recommend you guys to have a taste of it. Yeah I want to try the spicy one too but too bad I’m a little bit allergy to spicy food, yet I’ll still try it if I have that chance. Those who like spicy food can come and have a taste cuz many people said that this is a completely different level of spicy compare to the others.

Ok let’s get back to the topic. As we know, media consists a large range including newspapers, radio stations, television shows and so on. We are completely surrounded by them as this is an era of information burst, so who owns the media really does matter as they have the highest potential to affect and lead the audience to a particular thinking. Many people may claim that they have critical thinkings and won’t get easily affected, but don’t ever look down on what media can actually do. Take an example, you think that the education system in a particular nation is good, but if the newspapers are giving bad comments, tv shows keep saying it should be changed, people around you keep focusing and discussing this, won’t you start to question yourself whether it is good or not? The effects of media is not instantly, it comes slowly and gradually depends on how much we are exposed in that.

I’ll introduce both of the media first. Government owned media, the media for mass communication that is largely or completely controlled by the state. The contents of the news produced will more or less, support the government in terms of its content compared to the private owned media. For them it’s an effective way to increase the loyalty of the people towards the government. However, state media is not driven by individual interest, rather, it has the country’s interests at heart. Some of the examples are Singapore, South Korea and so on. In these countries, issues that threatens the racial and religious harmony is strictly prohibited and necessary legal actions may be taken if necessary.

The next is private owned media, which information can be obtained by different companies legally. Freedom of speech and democracy is promoted in, different point of views and conflict between the news is common in there. Unlike government own media, finance of each media outlet is provided by individuals or private groups. Due to this private ownership, the financiers of the private media have the right to dictate and choose what is broadcast through it. Norway is one of the examples of this type of media, it’s the first place in the world freedom press index and it’s free of censorship. One of the media outlet in there is Verdens Gang (VG), the online newspaper that is produced by them is popular among the Norwegians.

In my point of view, government owned media is better. Although its content might not as objective and fair compared to the private owned media sometimes, I believe that the government do so not for them but for their country. I’ve read through an article before that claims absolute honesty is actually bad for almost everything, sometimes we need lies as lubricant so that most of the things are flexible, it is considered reasonable for the government to control the media as long as the government can ensure the that the country is well.

That’s all for my blog post today and thank you for your reading. Hope you guys to have a nice day and now I’m going to grab a bite in McDonalds.

Post 3

Fellas! We’re back to the blog post and it’s headache time again. This time for this blog post, we’re gonna discuss about the uses and gratification model.

Two interesting questions. The first question is, why we do feel pain when we accidentally bite our tongue, but we don’t when we do it intentionally? Don’t know who discovered it but he/she’s probably a genius. The second question, why are you biting your tongue right now?

Ok sharing is over, let’s get to the topic now~ Let’s start it by knowing the meaning of uses and gratification model. Unlike other theories that focus on the effects of media towards people, the uses and gratification theory, also known as UGT, focuses on what do people do with media. From internet sources, UGT is an audience-centred approach to understanding why and how people satisfy their specific needs via specific media. For an example, just like horror movies or shows, people are not tied up and forced to watch and scared by the horror scenes, they choose to watch them to achieve their satisfaction either in curiosity or their desire to experience fear. In short, UGT is the theory where the audience are active and use media to satisfy them.

Some individuals use media as a tool to propaganda their beliefs and this may evolved into serious problems. Take an example which happened just few weeks ago, the ‘Invading Area 51’ issue. Maybe some of you guys don’t know much about area 51 so I’ll just explain briefly. Area 51 is an America air force base which was believed by most of the people to have aliens captured and kept in there. This all starts from a Facebook user Smyleekun, he raised an activity on Facebook named ‘Storm Area 51, They Can’t Stop All of Us’ after a live broadcast related to area 51 issue was published on Youtube.

Yeah it sounds ridiculous, but what’s more ridiculous is that almost 1.5 million people responded going in this activity! Including me! The description of the activity is also so silly which I’ll attached it below. This definitely caught the America Air Force’s attention, and they strictly warned them not to do shitty and stupid things like this. Of course the founder of this activity also said that this is just a prank, don’t take it serious.

this is the ‘Naruto Run’
so it’s gonna be like this???

And for me it’s like

As we can see, at first this was just a joke, some kind of meme prank activity, but it gained so much attention after that, imagine what will happen if bad intention is added into it. Lots and lots of people are using media to propaganda their beliefs either in a funny way or a serious way. Media has a lot of things which are interesting or sound reasonable, but we must always remain rational or else we will easily get subjected and controlled by the others.

I think this is the end of my blog post. This blog post is slightly different from before. Indeed it is still tough but the area 51 meme really makes my research interesting! That’s all and thanks for your reading, hope that one day I’ll have the chance to go there and free the aliens~

Post 2

Hello guys~ We’re back here for another assignment which will definitely destroy my brain cells.

Before we get into the topic, yeah about my last blog feed, kind of feeling like I’m writing primary level of essay after reading others’ blog feed. So, I will try to do this post better than the last one, also this is not included in the 400 words so don’t worry that I will cut the words by writing this kind of rubbish.

For this blog post, we’re going to discuss about the media. Two questions, what is wrong with the ‘media effects’ model and what are some interesting questions to ask about the role of the media today, in the shaping of mass opinion.

First of all, let’s get into the topic with a simple question, what is media? Media are the communication channels or platforms that are used to deliver various kind of information or data. From newspapers and books until televisions and smartphones, all of them are consist as media and there will be even more kinds of media to be developed in the future. The effects and impacts that influence the current trend, either positive or negative, are called media effect.

First question, what is wrong with the ‘media effects’ model? One of my answers is that the public always make association of media effects with most of the social problems nowadays. People always put the blame on media first when an individual engage in problematic behaviors, and try to make links between them. This is a completely reversed way of thinking as they try to look answers from answers. To understand an individual, we should study the individual.

Furthermore, referring to David Gauntlett, the public always think that children are vulnerable to media. People always think that children are the potential victims of the mass media, saying that children have no self-thinking skills and will easily get subjected by it. However, research shows that children as young as 7 years old can give thoughtful, critical opinions but always neglected by the adults. I will put the reference link of David Gauntlett’s assumption below for more information.

Okay I might have problems in attaching the link so I think I’ll just put a picture of it

Lastly, one of the interesting questions to ask about the role of the media today is that since so much of cons and even risks are there in media, why most of us are still using them? Also, why do people trust media more than the people around us where actually media is more deceiving and full of danger?

That’s all for my blog post, yeah hard time for me for the past ten hours. Also, in the comments, let me know your social media account and I will follow or add you so that we know each other more~

About Me

Hello there, welcome to my blog. I’m Tian Yi, a normal 19 years old Malaysian and I will be spending the next three years in here studying psychology. Nice to meet you all~

First of all, why psychology? Most of the people’s answer will be like I want to help the others who are troubled with problems. Yeah that indeed is one of my reasons, but it’s not the main reason why I’m here. There’s a chinese quotes that goes like this, victory comes only after you know yourself and the enemies better. Exactly, I want to become a clinical psychologist and knowing myself will be the first step of my journey.

Yeah you probably can’t believe I used about 45 minutes for the text above and now I’m stuck here. Wow this 400 words seems to be a little bit difficult for normal poeple like me as I don’t have anything special to share. Well then I guess I’ll just try to write something about me and extend as long as possible. As I’m a Malaysian, I don’t usually speak English actually, so my English proficiency may be quite low if compare to you guys, so if I’d made some stupid mistakes in this post, feel free to laugh😂 All of the words and language used in here are English, so for me it’s like studying philosophy and astronomy although I do really study them here. Yeah I will try my best to raise my proficiency up so that this won’t be the three years of doom for me.

One other thing I want to share about was my last job. I work in a steambot restaurant before named Guoma, ya I’m the hotpot guy which you guys might more familiar with. This was my first job and I work there as a full–timer. Only when you work as a waiter, you will then realise how many weird and bullxxxx people are in this world. I’m not going to list the weird things I have met because I’m not good in remembering those bad memories, what I want to share is the collegues I met there. There’s five of us and we are the steady gang in there, I’m so happy and grateful that I met them as we made so much precious memories together, I really wish that I could go back to the times where we acted like the boss there.

I like to draw when I’m free, not to be boastful but I’m qctually quite good at drawing and sketching, but it sucks when it comes to colouring😂 I like music as well, I play piano and it’s a way for me to release all my emotions as well as my negative thoughts. I like to play games as well, playing games is some kind of brain training activities to me, but I guess I won’t have much time on games after this. How about you, what do you like to do when you are free?

I think I’ll reach 400 words in this paragraph so I’m going to stop here. It’s hard to reach here from 1 word to 400 words and I really should give myself an a clap. So that’s all and thank you if you are reading my unprofessional post until here. Hope that you guys will have a lovely day~
